Relations Between Turkey and Vietnam, 22.12.2017

Turkey and Vietnam established diplomatic relations in 1978. The Turkish Embassy in Hanoi was opened in 1997 and Vietnam opened its Embassy in Ankara in 2005. 2018 will mark the 40th anniversary of our diplomatic ties.

The relations between Turkey and Vietnam thrive on a positive ground. The official visit by his Excellency Mr. Binali Yıldırım, Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey, to Vietnam on 22-24 August 2016 was a major milestone for our bilateral relations as it constituted the first official Prime Ministerial visit between the two countries. During the said visit, H.E. Mr. Yıldırım and his Vietnamese counterpart, H.E. Mr. Phuc agreed on further strengthening our relations through more frequent mutual visits and contacts in every field. Both leaders emphasized the political will to boost and upgrade our bilateral relations to higher levels.

Bilateral economic and trade relations between the two countries have also seen a rapid growth over the recent years. The volume of Turkish-Vietnamese trade amounted almost to 2 billion USD in 2016. Agreements on the Reciprocal Promotion and Protection of Investments and the Prevention of Double Taxation are already signed and are on the process of coming into force. The seventh Meeting of the Joint Economic and Trade Committee was held in Hanoi on 13 July 2017, under the co-chairmanship of H.E. Mehmet Müezzinoğlu, former Minister of Labour and Social Security of the Republic of Turkey and H.E. Mr. Tran Tuan Anh, Minister of Industry and Trade of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

The inauguration of Turkish Airlines’ Istanbul-Ho Chi Minh City flights in 2010 and Istanbul-Hanoi flights in 2016 have increased the commercial, cultural and touristic contacts between our two countries.

The second round of bilateral Consular Consultations was held in Hanoi on 16 November 2017.

Turkey and Vietnam enjoy a fruitful cooperation at the international level as well. Both countries supported each other’s candidacies in the UN and other international organisations. Vietnam welcomes Turkey's increasing engagement to Southeast Asia and supported Turkey’s ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partnership which was established in August 2017.
